Where We Stand – The Collection and Presentation of Migration History

25.04.2012 | Cologne

In April 2012, DOMiD hosted a discussion of developments in the musealization of migration, which included members of the academic, museum and archival communities. The symposium, titled "Where We Stand" ("Stand der Dinge"), took place at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne. The event's central questions included: In which areas do collections need to be expanded? How should collected materials be exhibited? How can exhibitions on migration be made systematically and permanently available to the public? And how can we optimize collection procedures as regards the topic of migration?

The primary goal of the conference was to appraise the current state of migration musealization and its potential to initiate intercultural dialogue. The contributions of notable figures from both academic and practical fields examined the incorporation of migration in archives and exhibition spaces. The discussion focused on the latest developments in the field, as well as its future prospects.
