De-Zentralbild. Migrants' views of their lives in the GDR. Culture of remembrance between East and West

The history of German migration is dominated by a West German perspective. But

Immigration also took place in the GDR, and it continues to shape the lives of Black people and People of Colour in East Germany to this day. But which memories and which images are publicly present? They are often stereotypical photos that are supposed to authenticate a lived socialist solidarity.

Photos of everyday life, work, parties, friendships or loneliness and longing are rarely visible.

The online exhibition "De-Zentralbild" has collected such images and the memories associated with them in Germany, Cuba, Mozambique and Vietnam. We invite you to get to know De-Zentralbild and discuss migration history(ies) in Germany with experts from different perspectives. The project "De-Zentralbild" was realised in cooperation with DOMiD.
