Re-Act! The Design of (Re-)Active Elements

The third DOMiDLabs exhibition opens its doors!

How did and do people arrive in our society? How are they perceived, treated and seen here? What role do gender, racist attributions, social background and financial circumstances play in this? Or to put it another way: What is a person worth?

People from urban society - together with the curator İdil Efe (Berlin), the exhibition builders from Kollektiv Plus X (Leipzig) and the DOMiDLabs project team - explored these questions in the third laboratory of the DOMiDLabs project. In addition, they jointly considered how a (re-)active permanent exhibition could be designed to address current debates and the latest findings and to offer the public opportunities to add to and comment on the exhibition.

The result of the collaboration is WERT / SCHÄTZEN – Eine Ausstellung über Anerkennung in der Migrationsgesellschaft.

WERT / SCHÄTZEN uses various stations to show how the participants of Lab #03 find individual answers to the intensively discussed questions in different ways and on different levels - and at the same time develop new questions. The exhibition offers space for exchange and invites visitors to react to contributions, share their own perspectives and thus reflect together on appreciation and recognition in the migration society.

Some people own objects that seem worthless to others but are invaluable to them. They are objects that tell stories about migration, farewell, community, loss, love, arrival and much more. They bring back memories, longings or nostalgia.

But sometimes it may be that there are no such objects - what does that do to a person? Can new objects also become treasures?

In the exhibition WERT / SCHÄTZEN - Eine Ausstellung über Anerkennung in der Migrationsgesellschaft, Amelia Pavel and Juliane Schneider share their personal objects and the stories behind them with visitors at their station Der Wert des Wertlosen.

Which treasures tell your story? - As part of a storytelling café, you are invited to share your treasures and their stories in a small group. You are welcome to bring along your beloved objects or photos of them. And if you feel like it, you can also make them part of the exhibition.

About the podcast
Hallo.Danke.Ja. These are the first words you need in Germany when you make a new start. Accordingly, the podcast Hallo.Danke.Ja. offers a platform for the stories behind the people who are making a new start in Germany as nursing staff. As a German teacher in a Cologne hospital network, Anna Di Biase gets to know nursing staff from all over the world. Whether from Eastern Europe, India, Tunisia or Iran, learning a language, working and arriving in a new country is more than just learning vocabulary and grammar.

Re-Act! The Design of (Re-)Active Elements

The kick-off meeting of Lab #03 took place in June 2023. It was attended by numerous people from urban society who had responded to a public call from DOMiDLabs. Together with İdil Efe (Berlin), Kollektiv Plus X (Leipzig), Sandra Vacca and Azziza B. Malanda (both DOMiDLabs), formed the lab team.

In terms of content, the third lab focussed on the following questions: How did and do people arrive in our society? How are they perceived, treated and seen here? What role do gender, racist attributions, social background and financial circumstances play in this? Or to put it another way: What is a person worth?

In addition to this, we jointly considered how a (re-)active permanent exhibition could be designed to take up current debates and the latest findings and to offer the public opportunities to add to and comment on them.

Lab #03 was organised in various workshops in which the participants contributed personal stories, thoughts and perspectives. These were gradually translated into design elements over the course of the lab process

In the DOMiDLabs: Labs for Participatory Museum Design project, different people come together in four labs. Their common goal is to develop design concepts based on various topics that will help the Documentation Centre and Museum on Migration in Germany (DOMiD) to establish a multifaceted migration museum in Cologne-Kalk. The DOMiDLabs project is being funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation from 2021 to 2024.
